In Ghana our Oyibi Project is establishing a centre for training and accommodation for vulnerable girls and women. We’re working with kayayei girls who come to Accra to look for work, and often are very vulnerable, sleeping in doorways and marketplaces. We are working with the Kayayei Association and through partnership with them, seeking to start by housing 10 young women.
Our long-term goal is to raise £90,000 to build a multipurpose building for accommodation and training for 300 young women and girls.
Last month Ascension Trust’s CEO, Les Isaac, made another visit to Accra and met with the head of community policing and the Kayayei Association to take our plans forward. Les visited the former landfill site that is now a shanty town occupied by many of these young women. It’s an area without any sanitation that has been repeatedly flooded.
Les discovered that in a world league table, Ghana is in second place for the number of its people that live without public or private toilet facilities.
