Ascension Trust, the head office for a number of community-focused initiatives including Street Pastors, was approached by Southeastern Rail Network to explore how Rail Pastors could support passengers and staff by offering a caring presence on trains and at stations.
Since April 2025, we have had the privilege of partnering with Southeastern to provide trained Street Pastors from initiatives across Kent and London. By caring, listening, and helping, our volunteers patrol platforms and trains throughout the network. Rail Pastors are Christians from a wide range of denominations, united by a desire to give back to their communities and to serve through voluntary action.
Our pilot patrol began in June 2025, and since then teams have been out several times each week—mornings, afternoons, and evenings. We have received a warm and encouraging welcome from both commuters and staff, many of whom tell us that our presence is reassuring and helps them feel safer and more supported while travelling.
Rail Pastors look out for anyone who may feel vulnerable, isolated, or simply in need of a friendly face. Everyone we meet is important to us. We offer hot drinks, sweets, and special stickers, and we engage with people in a non-judgmental, compassionate way to help them feel valued and safe on their journeys.
A significant part of our work also involves spending time with Southeastern staff—thanking them, listening to them, and ensuring they feel appreciated and supported in their roles.
